happened had they not found Alexandria.

"Get up," Merle said nudging his brother's let with his foot. "I said get up." Merle wanted to leave before the sun came up. This was the prime time to hunt,meet traps, what ever. The animals were feeding during this time. More chances to find animals were good for him.
He nudged Daryl again. Looking over at his brothers bow. No doubt that would be what his brother would use. Merel would stick with his rifle and pistol. He didn't plan on using either, unless he had to. They were to loud, would scare off the animals. Plus it could get messy, ruin the meat with an automatic. Daryl could do the shooting, Merle would skin it.
He waited for his brother at the door. "Woods are a calling brother. Let's head out before some punk decides they want to come with. I want talk to you alone,moo something to say,something that I saw."
He kept his voice low. Making his way down the steps he tightened the strap on his gun. It was secure, swung off his arm. He hadn't been hunting with his brother in so long, even before all this. Last the two went together they were teenagers. Hell Daryl probably wasn't even ten yet. It would be like old times, simpler times.
He took a step forward. "What you say brother, think we'll bag us a nice old buck. Hell I'd settle for skunk or a gopher right about now, starving." He laughed to himself with a smile as he made his way to the woods.
Daryl groaned as he heard his brother demanding him to get up, feeling him nudge him. He kept his eyes shut, hoping his brother would give up on whatever he wanted with him. Though he knew Merle was never the type to just let things go, so whether he liked it or not he was going to be waking up right now. "Woods are a calling brother. Let's head out before some punk decides they want to come with. I want talk to you alone,moo something to say,something that I saw." He heard his brother say as he walked toward the door.
"Asshole!" Daryl called out to his brother for waking him up when he heard Merle walking down the stairs. He yawned and wiped the sleep out of his eyes, he didn't really know how much sleep he had gotten before being abruptly awaken. Every part of him just wanted to roll over and go back to sleep, but he didn't really feel like pissing Merle off today. He got up, stretched, and grabbed his crossbow before groggily walking down the steps after his brother.
He caught up with Merle outside the house and listened to him talk about the animals he wanted to catch today. Why they had to go hunting right now he didn't quite know, but guessed by the time they got out to the woods he'd actually be awake. "What is it you wanted to talk about?" Daryl asked Merle, wondering what on earth he could quite possibly want to talk to him about now. He hoped it wasn't anything bad, he didn't quite like defusing situations when Merle was mad.
Daryl had followed. That was good, meant Merle didn't have to drag him out of the house. Daryl didn't need to sleep in. He was loosing his edge, growing soft. Merle looked back at him, waiting. "Well nice of you to finally join me little brother. Good to see you can still get up before dawn. That all this playing house, and family times hasn't made you soft. You still remember how to hunt right? Or has all this bonding and muscly cr*p made you forget?"
Merle kept his hands at his sides. Sighing a little he looked up at "I wanted to get some hunting in. Im tired of eating cracker and expired cans. Let's hunt first and talk later. Don't want to scare off the animals. Start tracking little brother, you were always better than I was."
Merle kept his gun raised as he started making his way to the woods. He stepped over s fallen branch, ducking under s few leaves as he made his way to the thick of the woods. He hoped Daryl would take to following him.
"You really think settling down someplace is the right idea. Finding some place to call your own. It worked for the governor. Wood burry stood for a long time till Rick and his pals showed up. He doesn't seem the most stable, him, Abraham, the group. They all seem like they are going to break down at any moment. Settling down might be the right idea, if this group can even settle for that long, brother. Just don't want another Woodbury. Even without the governor, what we had to do to keep it going. They don't have the nads to do it Daryl. What we had to do, they aren't strong enough. We could, but not them brother, they're weak."
Daryl kept silent and listened to Merle's smart ass comments about him as they made their way through the woods. Any other day Daryl would retort to them, but he was way too tired to care about his brother's usual way of bad mouthing him. He knew though that it was all in good intention, through his whole life Merle tried as hard as he could to keep Daryl from going soft. He could see why too, especially now. If you were weak, you died.
He raised his eyebrows as he listened to Merle talk about how he wanted him to track, and that Daryl had always been better at it than him. For once it seemed like his brother was giving him a compliment with no strings attached. Though as Merle went on, he knew he had been sadly mistaken. Merle always had to continue talking and ruin it anytime Daryl felt good about what he said. He stopped scanning the ground for animal tracks and stopped hoping his brother would too, what he was saying now was serious.
"Oh for Christ's sake, not this shit." Daryl groaned, resting his forehead against his palm. He knew this conversation was going to come up with Merle at some point, it was only a matter of time and he felt too tired to even discuss it now. Why did his brother have to spring things on him at the most inopportune times. "I trust in Rick. He's never lead us wrong before. If he thinks it can be done, it can be done."
He said bluntly. Daryl couldn't honestly believe his brother was suggesting them going off on their own again, he had to have known by now that it wasn't a good idea but obviously he had guessed wrong. The last time they went off on their own after they had been reunited didn't work out, why would it work out this time? Besides, now was different. He couldn't leave Beth and go run off with his brother, but of course he couldn't tell Merle this and expect him to understand and not chide him for it. "We couldn't make it as far on our own." He muttered, "Man, why do you gotta be like this?" Daryl asked. Why couldn't they just hunt without Merle making things complicated for him.
When Dsryl stopped Merle did the same. He took a few steps back, turning around to look at his brother. He kept his relaxed stance, but knew Daryl wanted to get serious. He wanted to actually talk about this. This wasn't even what he wanted to talk to him about, Merle was just choosing a topic to talk about as they went this way.
"I didn't mean you and me split off," Merle said calmly, "I know you want to stay with them. Plus there's safety in numbers, ill give you that. No it's all what Woodbury went though. Walkers are easy to kill, but the others, humans. Sure you, me, Rick and, Abraham can take care of them but the others couldn't. You think they could kill someone, that Glenn, Noah, or Beth could kill someone. You're gonna get raiders coming at the town, house, wherever we set up shop. They are gonna want us dead little brother. No I had to kill my fair share at Woodbury. We all did. That's because we had men to do it, there not enough of us here. Sure when they strike we can, but not attacking first. I don't see this lasting very long
He paused,looking around, "No me and you going out on our own isn't what I was talking about. Me and you, out there, I don't see that. You need these people now. But I don't think we should all settle down. We need to keep moving, stopping, it means death. Believe it or not, I don't want to see any of these people die."
Merle started to walk again, looks for tracks. "Let's get back to hunting. Find that trail little brother."
Daryl sighed at Merle, but was relieved that his brother didn't mean for them to break off from their group. Although he didn't know how it'd ever be possible, he really wished one day everyone could make amends with his brother and that Merle could become just as much of a part of the group as Daryl was. Though no body could truly see Merle for the man he was like Daryl did. Even if, he was just happy enough the group allowed him in for his sake. Merle was part of the package, there was no getting him without his brother.
"Could you just have a little faith, brother?" Daryl snapped back annoyed. Although he definitely understood his brother's reasoning, and could see that his concerns were valid and he meant well, they couldn't keep living on the run anymore. Daryl was feeling too old for it, and didn't understand how Merle at his age didn't feel the same as well. "Cowards run. Cowards also die. If we keep living the rest of our life on the run, we're going to die too. We can't live the rest of our lives not settling Merle.." He said, feeling a sense of sadness come over him. He realized the reality himself all too well of the dangers of settling, but at the same time the dangers of living out in the open on the move all time were sure to kill some of the others as well.
"There's no harm in seeing where it goes. At best we get a place to call home, at worst we just move on and try again.." Daryl said his eyes searching the ground, kicking over the leaves on the forest floor looking for some kind of tracks. Soon he was able to find the tracks of deer hooves in the dirt. He stopped and crouched down, examining them. "Look at this." He murmured to his brother, his finger pointing out what he had found. "It's a deer. Looks a bit old, but probably not more than a couple hours. What do you think about it?" He inquired his brother for input. If Merle decided the tracks looked good enough to follow, then they could hopefully spend the better half of the morning tracking the deer, and hopefully bringing back food in time for lunch.

"Faith in what, a bunch a kids an pansies," Merle asked with a laugh. "I got faith in you and me brother, in us. They ain't strong. You know that. We can give it a shot. But I bet we'll get overrun. Be it raiders or walkers, we gonna have conflict. We're heading to more populated areas, bigger, more stuff but more danger. Two sides of every coin little brother."
Merle paused. "Maybe we can do it, maybe not. But it ain't gonna be easy. As long as we don't let our defended down." He moved along the woods, stepping over a few twigs. Spotting the tracks after Daryl pointed them out he stopped. "Mud's still fresh. Was stepped in recently," he said calmly. He moved forward, raising his good arm he pointed to a cluster of trees. "Look, branches are broke up there. Something pushed through, walking slowly, snapped the twig. Deer most likely went that way."
He cleared his throat, lowering his voice, "Lead the way brother, follow that trial."

"They're not a bunch of kids and pansies." Daryl sighed in their groups defense as he followed the tracks in the dirt. If the trail didn't go cold, he knew they would probably be able to find it within the next hour, maybe sooner if it was stopped to eat. "Every single one of them is capable. And we'll be able to build and defend good walls, especially with someone like Abraham on our side now." He pointed out. Abraham was a military man, more so than Merle was, and he'd be able to set them on the right track when it came to defenses.
"It ain't gonna be easy," He agreed with Merle for once, "But it's what makes sense. Don't let your fear get in the way from what we need to do." Daryl spoke. All their lives Daryl had taken commands from Merle, and trusted in his guidance and let his brother lead him. For once it seemed the tables were turned. Since Merle had betrayed the group by trying to take Michonne back to the governor though, Daryl had felt himself look up to his brother a lot less and become his own person, and make his own decisions on what he thought was right. Daryl still loved his brother, his only living kin, no matter what he had done - but he was finally feeling the freedom of being his own person.
The brother's kept walking together exchanging words in low voices, careful of their footing for what had seemed to be more than an hour. Eventually they found themselves at the edge trees and looking out into a small meadow in the forest. Daryl put his arm out to stop Merle from walking forward. "Look!" He hissed quietly, "Well I'll be damned. It's that buck you wanted." In the center of the clearing a young buck was oblivious to their presence, eating away at whatever it could find on the ground. Although because of it's age it's rack was not impressive, it was still a buck none the less.
Aiming his loaded crossbow, Daryl took a deep breath in and on his exhale fired a bolt from the bow. The bolt cut through the air and made contact with the buck, piercing through it's chest where it's heart was. Sweet success. The animal fell and never even knew what hit him. Daryl grinned at his kill, looking back at Merle for his brother's appraisal.
"If you insists brother. But I still don't think they are strong. They leave big gaps, let emotions get to them. Carol seems like the only level headed one here. I don't want them corrupting you little brother, making you go soft," Merle said as they walked. "But I can agree they have a certain set of skills. The samurai, Abraham, Tyreese, they all have a set of skills to them. Great fighters. I can give them that. They just got to be able to take that life for the group when it comes to it. The life of people before they strike. Can't give them that chance."
He listened to his brother. "Alright, but if I don't like it I'll let you know," he said with a laugh as they kept tracking. He moved under branches and around logs. A deer was nimble, and despite the large antlers could move quicker and sleeker than either Daryl or Merle could. He weaved through the trees, following the trial of hoof prints, broken branches, droppings, and fir as his brother was. Both were natural born trackers, though Daryl, obviously had more skill than Merle, but his brother wasn't a slacker with hunting either.
He saw the buck, hearing his brother as he fired. The bolt hit the deer's heart, dropping it to the ground. Merle walked forward, clasping his hand on his brothers back."Well I'll be baby brother, nice shooting," He said placing a foot on the deer. He put his stump against it and ripped the arrow out with his good hand. Handing it back to Daryl he smiled. "How much of those you got left? We need to find some more, maybe there's a hunting cabin or sporting good store where we settle down."
He looked down at the deer, "Looks heavy, we'll have to drag it. If we brought some rope we could skin it right here. Either way we should eat it tonight, chat freeze it like the good old days."
Daryl didn't feel the need to respond to his brother's opinions about their group. He realized that no matter what he said, him and Merle would always have varying opinions. For the most part though, he understood his brother's point of view even if he didn't agree completely. He hoped for now however the topic could be dropped as he just killed a deer.
He felt Merle's hand on his back as his brother praised him. Daryl listened as his brother talked about finding a sporting goods store or a hunting cabin where they could settle down. He didn't think there'd be a hunting goods store around anywhere in the middle of nowhere in these woods, but the hunting cabin seemed like a possibility. "Ain't gonna be no stores in the middle of the woods, bro - but there's probably some hick like us that has a little cabin out here somewhere." He said as he began covering the deer's body with fallen branches and whatever other foliage he could find. This would disguise it from biters and any other assholes that might come across it.
"Not gonna be dragging our dinner around unless we know for sure where something is out here. That's just wasted energy." Daryl explained his logic as he hid their deer's body. "Plus, I ain't bringing dinner to some assholes say we do find a place and it's occupied." He muttered, standing back looking satisfied with how he hid their meal. The forest scents would be sure to mask the smell of their deer somewhat from the walkers to the point they would probably not even notice it laying there if they walked past, and he doubted anyone but him and Merle was out here for the living to come across it.
"Come on," He said to Merle, turning around and started following a trail hoping it would lead them to someone's abandoned shack out here. "We need to find somewhere and scope it out quickly to get this thing skinned. Not staying somewhere for the night though, we got other people to feed, not just ourselves." Daryl chided his brother. Of course Merle wasn't thinking about feeding them, but Daryl sure was. His mind immediately thought of Beth, and Rick's kids, they were the last of people he'd ever let go hungry if he could do something about it. Of course he could never voice that to Merle without his brother claiming he was going soft, and maybe he already did, but so what?
"Said where we settle down brother, not while we're out hunting today. You just talked about finding a place. Let's hope it's one with a sporting goods store and an armoury if arrows. You need them, only have so many left. But a hunting cabin could work for today. Has to be one out here. Look for a trail. ATVbtracks to get to it," Merle said as he moved along. He looked at the dear, watching his brother cover it.
"I figured you'd drag it back to your friends. Give them some nice deer steaks to chew on. Bet the Chinese kid would love the eyes," Merel said with a laugh, "good to see you already gave up hope on them, want to keep it just for us." He chucked as he leaned on a tree. Taking his knife he carved a line in it. To anyone passing it would look like a simple scrape, bark peeling. But if they didn't get lost they would know exactly where it was.
The sound of crows made Merle look up. "Looks like we got some competition baby brother. Scavengers may pick it clean. Better hurry."
As they followed the trail Daryl mentioned not staying the night and finding a place to skin it. "Sounds good Daryl. I wasn't planning on being gone the whole day. Hell I didn't even expect to find anything. I just wanted to talk to you, in private." He nodded, "so let's find this place, skin the deer, transport it back, and cook ourselves a meal."
He knew what his brother would be thinking, no remark, agreeing, was Merle going insane. No this just made sense. Dsryl wanted to stay with them, if the people starve then they would be weak. Merle wasn't going to have just him and Daryl do all the heavy lifting. Plus a deer had lots of meat to much for just him and Daryl, and they wouldn't want to waste anything.
Merle picked up the pass behind his brother, his rifle swinging as he walked. He came up through clearing and stopped. There was a cabin in it, an ATV parked out front. The cabin looked old dirty, yet the ATV was relatively clean.
"Look alive Darla, we might have company," he said raising his gun. He walked forward, stepping toward the cabin. A voice could be heard inside, talking to another. It was male, an adult, local accent. Merle pulled up his gun, resting the barrel on his stump. "Let's proceed slowly, don't want to spook 'em."
It wasn't too long after they were on the trail that they found a cabin. Daryl couldn't believe their luck, now all they need to do was find some supplies here, and perhaps some rope. Maybe they could scavenge the inside of it and find something of worth, perhaps some more weapons or ammo. They could take the deer here, skin it, package it, and bring it back to their group and cook a meal in the fire pit that resided in the back yard of their old Victorian home.
"Look alive Daryl, we might have some company." Merle whispered to him as he got his gun ready. Daryl quickly loaded his crossbow, this ruined his plans if people were inside, he wasn't just going to go in and rob undeserving people of their possessions, but maybe he could find some rope laying around out here that they wouldn't miss. Daryl strained his ears and listened to what sounded like an adult male talking, these occupants were definitely of the living type.
"Damn. I was hoping we could loot this place, but not if there's people occupying the place." He admitted to his brother, frowning at what he had at first thought was a fortunate circumstance. Daryl crept around to the back of the cabin with Merle, there was a fire pit and it was obvious whoever was occupying the place had skinned animals in the backyard as well. "What do you suggest we do?" He asked for his brother's input as he tried his best to move tarps aside hoping to find them some equipment that could be useful yet not too valuable to steal.
"I suggest you grow a pair little brother. Man up and get in there. What's one little group. What one or two men, you've killed more than that. You want to survive, get in their a loot it," Merle said coming around the building exterior. "I ain't saying you gotta kill them. But if you we go in, scare them, odds are they don't own this place. Shit's inside is just as much our right as it is there's."
He peered in a window. Inside were two men. One was older, about Ricks age. He was tall, skinny. His face was withered. Dressed in a plad hunting jacket, cargo pants, and Yellow coloured hiking boots he walked. He had on elbow and shin bass. His hair was longer, resembling dsryl's in length, but fuller, a moustache upon his lip.
The other was young, not much older than Beth or Noah. He wore an open sports cost, a pair of dirt acid washed jeans. He was of Mexican decent, deep brown eyes with messy brown hair. He didn't even have sign of face hair, mostly likely unable to even grow it yet.
Both men held hunting rifles. The younger one leaned against the table, his gun across his lap. The older man was talking to him, discussing what they were to do next. He held his rifle casually across his arms as he did, unaware of Merle and Daryl outside.
"Kick the door down and let's do this brother. Just two of them. We can scare them."
"Merle!" Daryl snapped at his brother, why was he always like this? Daryl wasn't one to do harm onto others that didn't deserve it. It just wasn't ever his style, or like him to do things like that. "They ain't done nothing to us, I ain't about to go in an' just fuck up their day over nothin'." He scoffed at his brother in a quiet voice, the last thing he wanted was to alert these men's attention to them.
Daryl peered through the same window that Merle was looking into. It was an older white guy about Rick's age, and a young Hispanic boy who looked like he could be in his late teens to early twenties. If Daryl wanted to see the existence of good remaining in this world, then he had to be it too. There was no good inside of him if he just barged in there and held them hostage and took their stuff. If things got heated, he didn't want them to die today either, especially if it was over nothing.
Just as he was bickering back at his brother though, he noticed the older male stair right at them through the window. They had been spotted. "Shit!" He exclaimed, as Merle quickly realized they had been spotted too. Daryl wanted to duck and hide, but his brother just stood there. The bastard probably wanted a confrontation. Daryl quickly picked up his gun, placing his bow over his back.
The two men quickly made their way to the porch and faced him and Merle, with guns drawn on them. "Put your weapons down, and hands up where we can see them." Demanded the older man of the two. Daryl threatening narrowed his eyes at the men, and kept a straight face. No way was he letting these people disarm them. He almost felt like cursing right now, of course Merle would get them in a situation like this. His whole life Merle was always good about getting them in risky situations.
"We ain't disarming ourselves. You put your guns down, we'll put ours down and be on our way. No body needs to get hurt today." Daryl spoke to the men, hoping they'd heed the advice. If they didn't, he knew him and Merle would probably end up killing them today. He quickly, and nervously glanced at his brother. Daryl hoped Merle wouldn't say anything stupid, or try anything stupid, but he knew that was wishful thinking.
"I ain't saying we kill them. Ain't even saying we harm them. But we go in, shake things up inside. We demand they leave, and then go through the cupboards and drawers. When we done we haul this deer back and skin it. Simple and easy, ain't no harm to anyone. We both know that ain't there place brother, who he hell is still inthe home they owned from before this. They found it same as us," Merle said moving around his arms as he spoke. He smirked, "Only difference is they scare easier than us."
Daryl swore and Merle looked at the window. "Shit is right," He said pulling his rifel. He gripped the handle, resting the barrel on his stump. Moving around he looked down the sights. There wasn't a scope, but it still had the hard rail. He side stepped around the corner, watching Daryl react as well. The older man had spotted them, shows them for not acting. At least they might get that right now. Merle grinned at that thought.
He kept the rifel raised. He was still a decent shot, despite it being his no dominant, now only dominant, hand. He had to learn how to shoot all over again. Most of it was just spray and pray. Though he could still leg a walker shot from across a football field with precise aim, just running and gunning wasn't the same. Pistol would have to suit that. But for right now, an assault rifle was more intimidating.
Merle smirked as he came around the corner. The older man barked orders and Merle just laughed. He looked over at Daryl before stopping right in front of the pair in the cabin. He kept a relaxed stance, smirk on his face. Unlike his brother he didn't glare. He was glad for confrontation, meant they could still take this place and clear it out. They could scare these guys away.
"As my brother said. We ain't disarming shit. So best lower you weapons. See we're just looking for a cabin to bunker down in for the night. Maybe find some ammo, and food. Didn't mean to stumble across you and your boytoy. You lay down your weapons and we'll be on our way. As my brother said,"
"The hell you call me, redneck hick," The Hispanic boy said, "I ought to shoot you for saying that. Ain't no ones boytoy you inbred f*ck."
The older man still kept his gun raised. "Mario, don't talk like that. Listen we don't want trouble either. But we ain't lowering our weapons, ain't stupid. You'll just kill us once we do. You move on, and no one gets hurt you here."
Merle just laughed at their response as he looked at Daryl. "They serious little brother? They think they are so tough and scary. I've seen scarier shit scraped off my boot then little Sanchez over there. We ain't leavin' and we're getting in the cabin. So stand aside, before you get hurt."
