There was a room in the old Victorian house that held shelves and shelves of books. Probably someone's office, since it had a desk and chair too, but Kit had been more interested in the books. She looked through the titles of the lower shelves, but it was clear from her increasingly furrowed brow that she was not finding what she was looking for. After a couple of minutes, she'd begun to pull books from the shelves, one after another, anger seeming to have built up out of nothing and taken out in a tantrum of emptying a shelf free from it's contents in a flurry of noise and flutter of pages.
Panting slightly, her narrowed eyes caught sight of a set of encyclopedias on a higher shelf. The ferocity faded from her face as she ran over to the desk , grabbed the chair and dragging it over, kicking other books aside along the way. The chair made a squeal as it was dragged across the wood floor. She climbed up and reached until she could grab one of the thick, leather bound books. She took the "b" and the "h" and the "p" editions before jumping down back to the floor.
Books in hands, the girl looked around the room for a moment before choosing to crawl into the space under the desk. There she sat cross legged and unfolded one of the books on her lap before starting to flip through the pages.

Merle went into the room to get alone. Not that he needed to be, he just wanted to be by himself right now. He didn't want to be disturbed, bugged, or bothered. It was quiet calm, despite the mess. Looked like someone was grabbing kindling for the fire, books everywhere. The desk was moved. Maybe Beth was here, mshe was short. He laughed to himself.
Merle sat on the desk. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a pack of smokes. He placed one to his lips and lit it with a match. He flicked the match away and took a drag, flicking some ash on to floor. Despite his mother dying in a cigarette fire he didn't care. The house wouldn't burn, he knew it.
He heard a shuffle and cleared his throat. "Alright come on out. I know you're under there."

Kitty froze up as she heard someone enter the room. A breathe caught in her throat, she kept quiet as the footsteps trod closer and then the desk creaked slightly. A few moments passed before she caught the smell of smoke and crinkled her nose. An ash fell to the ground and she moved slightly, to snuggle closer into her little cove.
Her lip tightened a little into a frown as she heard a man's voice commanding her to come out. "I wasn't hiding," she scoffed back, pointedly, remaining where she was. "I was just sitting under here."
Her voice was decisively young, not having gone through the telling change that came with puberty. Despite that, it was also stubborn, and more so as she added, "And besides, I was here first...and...I'm busy."
